Transitional Bilingual Learning Community
Transitional Bilingual Learning Program/La Comunidad Bilingüe en Transición al Ingles
We are the Transitional Bilingual Learning Program (TBLC) at Truman College. In this two-year program, you will begin your college career in a special community, with support all along the way. Although your classes are conducted in Spanish at first, we make sure that you are ready to take all of your classes in English by your second year at Truman. We can also provide a four-semester scholarship to most of our students, which covers tuition. You do not need to be a resident or U.S. citizen to be in this program or to be eligible for the scholarship. Our average GPA after the first semester is 3.07, and the retention rate after the program is 85%, both higher than average for Hispanic students at Truman.

What our students say about the TBLC
The TBLC helps by having you work in small groups. And in your own language. I was afraid of coming to school and not understanding what was being said. The TBLC gives you a gradual introduction to English. They help you determine what you need now and for the future, and to figure out what your interests are [academically].
TBLC Student Support Services
Additionally, in order to help students achieve their goals, the TBLC provides them with a full range of support services, including:
- TRIO program/Studio classroom.
- Club activities
- Tutoring
- Spanish/English exchange program
- On-going college orientation
- Academic advisement
- Career planning and development
- Transfer information
- Financial aid advisement
Since most TBLC students do not qualify for financial aid due to their undocumented status, the TBLC program assists them with other financial aid opportunities. The Harold Washington Scholarship covers the cost of tuition for students who do not qualify for financial aid. Those receiving the scholarship must be enrolled as full-time students (12 credit hours or more each semester) and maintain a cumulative 3.00 GPA. Students may apply for the scholarship for two academic years, as long as they meet the criteria. The scholarship does not cover summer classes.
