Do's and Don't for Parents
- DO'S
- Support your adult child in his/her educational endeavors
- Understand the difference between the way disability is treated in secondary school (high school) vs higher education (college)
- Truman College does not create or abide by an IEP, though we will use it as a guide in providing services
- Truman College cannot pay for a diagnosis for your adult child, though we can give you a list of referrals
- Make sure that your child has taken advantage of all of the resources available to him/her through his/her secondary education (high school).
- Most of these resources are provided by the state or federal government
- Once your child reaches the age of 18 (the age of majority), these services are much more difficult to come by
- Make sure your child's documentation is current (within the last five years)
- DON'TS
- Expect the school to release any information to you about your adult child due to privacy laws
- Your adult child may sign a release of information form, authorizing us to release information to you
- Inform the school of your adult child's disability or make requests on his/her behalf—your adult child must make the request him/herself
