Circulation

Who may borrow books from the Library?
All students who are currently enrolled in Truman College and have a valid student I.D. may borrow library books.

What must I do in order to borrow a book?
Bring the book and your Truman student I.D. to the Circulation Desk at the front of the Library. The book will be recorded as checked out to you and stamped with the date on which it must be returned.

I forgot to bring my Truman student I.D. May I borrow books by using my registration receipt/driver's license/public library card?
You may borrow books on your registration receipt for only the first three weeks of the semester. After that, the Truman student I.D. is required. Neither driver's licenses nor public library cards may be used to borrow books.

How many books may I borrow at one time?
You may borrow up to five books.

How long is the loan period?
The loan period is two weeks. However, if you wish to keep the books longer, you can renew the loan for two more weeks if no one else has placed a reservation on the books.

How do I renew the loan period? Can I do it over the phone or online?
In order to renew a loan period, you must bring the books to the Library's Circulation Desk by the original due date and make the request in person. This cannot be done over the phone or online.

What happens if I don't bring a book back on time?
You will be fined $0.25 per day for each book that is late, up to a maximum of $5.00 per book.

What happens if I lose a book?
You will be fined the cost of replacing the book.

What happens if I don't pay fines that I owe for late or lost books?
If you do not pay your fines, a hold will eventually be placed on your record. You will be unable to borrow books or register for classes until the fines have been paid.

Someone else has borrowed the book that I want to read. May I reserve the right to read it next?
Yes, you may place a reservation on a book by going to the Circulation Desk with your student I.D. and filling out a request form. When the book is returned, you will be notified by phone and will have 48 hours to come and borrow it.

May I borrow reference books or magazines?
No, only circulating books may be borrowed. However, if you need an article from a reference book or magazine, you can duplicate it on a photocopy machine.

My professor has placed articles and books in the Library for the class to read. Where are these kept? How do I get to use them?
When teachers send materials to the Library, they are kept in a section called Course Reserves, which is located behind the Circulation Desk. To use an item from Course Reserves, you must ask for it by call number at the Circulation Desk. To learn the item's call number, go to the Course Reserves section of the Library's online catalog and search using either your instructor's name or your course's name and number.

May I take home items that my teacher has placed in Course Reserves?
No, Course Reserve items must usually be used within the Library itself.

I need a book that is located at another library. Can you arrange for me to borrow it?
Please contact a reference librarian to determine whether this is possible.

Audiovisual

What happens in the A.V. Department?
The A.V. Department has a collection of videotapes, DVDs, audiotapes, and slides that you can use within the Library or for a class presentation. Some teachers also place homework-related audio- and videotapes on reserve in the A.V. Department; in some cases, you can have your own copy made of a homework tape.

When is the A.V. Department open?
The A.V. Department is open whenever the Library is open. However, during some evening hours, there may not be a staff member at the A.V. Counter. In that case, please go to the Circulation Desk and ask for help.

May I borrow videotapes or audiotapes?
Ordinarily, no: audiovisual materials must normally be used within the library. However, there are two exceptions. 1) If you need to use an audiovisual item for a class presentation, you can make arrangements to do this by contacting the Audiovisual Librarian, either through email or by calling 773-907-4877. 2) A few teachers have placed CDs on reserve for their students at the Library's Circulation Desk; these may be borrowed for a period of two days.

I missed a class where the teacher showed a movie. Can I watch it in the A.V. Department?
If you miss a movie that was shown in class, ask your teacher whether he or she can place it on temporary reserve in the A.V. Department. Once we have the movie on reserve, you can watch it in the Library.

May I bring my own video or audiotapes to play on the Library's equipment?
You may do so only if your tapes are related to your coursework. Library equipment may not be used for entertainment purposes.

Do you have videos for the TeleWEB (TVW), TV College (TVC), or Study Unlimited (SUN) courses offered by the Center for Distance Learning?
In most cases, we do not. The only location with a complete set of videos for these courses is the Audio-Visual Center of the Harold Washington College Library. However, we do have videos for SUN History 247 (The Africans). Students enrolled in SUN History 247 may view these tapes at any time when the Library is open.

May I borrow audiovisual equipment or tapes to use in my speech presentation?
Yes, but you must arrange to do this ahead of time. Contact the Audiovisual Librarian by email or at 773-907-4877 in order to make a reservation.

My teacher told me to get copies made of homework tapes that are in the A.V. Department. How do I do this? Do I have to pay?
To get a copy of a homework tape, come to the Audiovisual Counter at any time when the Library is open. You must be able to tell the A.V. staff person your course number, your teacher's name, and the title of the tape to be copied. (Example: "Humanities 201, Ken Hope, American Song," not just "Humanities 201.") You must also bring a blank audiotape that is the same length as the tape that you want copied. In other words, if the original homework tape is 60 minutes long, you must bring a 60-minute tape. If you do not know the tape length that you need, you can ask your teacher or call the A.V. Department at 773-907-4878. The blank tape does not need to be new, but it should be a name-brand tape (such as TDK, Maxell, or Sony) rather than an unknown discount brand. (This is because discount tapes sometimes break in our duplicating machine.) When you get to the A.V. Counter, you will fill out a form and leave your blank tape; your copy will be ready on the following day. You may request two tapes to be copied at a time. There is no charge for this service.

Why does the A.V. Department make copies of some tapes but not others?
The reason is that copyright law forbids us to duplicate most tapes and videos.

How do I find out what video and audiotapes are in the A.V. Department?
You can look through the audiovisual catalog online at this Web site, view it at the A.V. Counter in the Library, or call 773-907-4878 to ask about a particular tape.

Employment

I would like to work in the library. What jobs are available and how do I apply for them?
Most of the library jobs available to students are work/study positions that are assigned through the Office of Financial Aid and have specific eligibility requirements. The Library also has a few hourly staff positions for which anyone may apply. To find out whether one of these jobs is available, check the bulletin boards within Library itself: if there is an opening, we will post a notice with instructions on how to apply.
