Online Databases

Comprehensive

ProQuest Research Library and Newspapers includes full-text articles from 1400 journals and abstracts from 2300 journals. It covers a wide range of subject areas, including the arts, business, education, health, the humanities, international issues, law, the military, psychology, the sciences, the social sciences, and women's interests. Full-text articles from the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times and other major newspapers are available in the Newspapers module.

EBSCO offers a large selection of full-text articles and abstracts from journals, magazines, and newspapers. There are several subject-specific modules available, including one for the health sciences and another for business.

CQ Researcher Online is a full-text database designed as a basic research tool for current events and socio-political topics. It provides timely, in-depth information on controversial subjects like abortion and racial profiling. Each article includes a thorough overview of the issue, background information, a chronology, a summary of the current situation, projections for the future, a bibliography, and notes.

Opposing Viewpoints provides opinion essays on a wide variety of social issues. It also includes topic overviews, statistics, newspaper and magazine articles, images, primary documents, and links to relevant websites.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a collection of electronic reference books (mostly encyclopedias and handbooks) in many different subject areas. The initial collection has around a hundred electronic reference titles, most of which are also available in print format in the Library. The most important advantage of this collection is that it allows unlimited simultaneous users to access it 24/7 on campus or off campus.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online contains the entire print version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, plus hundreds of recent articles not yet included in the print version. It also includes links to related Web sites selected by Britannica editors, a world atlas, statistical portraits of the world's countries, the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, the Year in Review dating from 1993, and many other useful resources.

FirstSearch is a collection of sixteen different databases, some of which contain full-text articles. The collection includes ArticleFirst, ClasePeriodica, Ebooks, ECO, ERIC, GPO, IllinoisCatalog, MEDLINE, PapersFirst, Periodical Abstracts, Proceedings, WilsonSelectPlus, WorldAlmanac, WorldCat, and WorldCatDissertations. Literature

Literature Resource Center features the complete texts of Contemporary Authors and the Dictionary of Literary Biography. It contains articles from Contemporary Literary Criticism and more than 30 other Gale literary reference sets, including Poetry Criticism, Drama Criticism, Nineteenth-Century Literary Criticism, Novels for Students, Literature and Its Times, and other works.

Nursing/Medicine/Allied Health

CINAHL with Full Text (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature available through EBSCO) is a database that covers information on the professional literature of nursing, allied health disciplines, biomedicine, behavioral sciences, alternative medicine and consumer health. It is a research tool that provides full text articles from more that 620 journals and has full text coverage for over 218 books and monographs. Also included are legal cases, clinical innovations, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (EBSCO) provides over 500 scholarly full-text journals focusing on nursing, health and medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. In addition, the database includes Lexi-Pal Drug Guide which covers generic and brand names.

Health Source: Consumer Edition (EBSCO) is a collection of consumer health information providing material on topics in the medical sciences, nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. It provides full-text access to popular health magazines, books and pamphlets. The database also has access to Lexi-Pal Drug Guide and Merriam-Webster’s Medical Desk Dictionary.

Health Module (ProQuest) is a database on health that covers subjects such as medical conditions, drugs, substance abuse, health insurance, health policy and other medical topics. It includes full-text articles and abstracts from peer-reviewed journals.

MEDLINE (FirstSearch) is the world’s most comprehensive source of life sciences and biomedical bibliographic information. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the database covers all areas of medicine including dentistry, nursing and veterinary medicine. The database corresponds to the print Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature and International Nursing Index. It includes over 17 million citations and abstracts from over 19,530 periodical titles from 1950 to date.

MedlinePlus directs the user to information that helps answer health questions. It brings together authoritative health and medical information from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health and other government agencies and health organizations. MedlinePlus gives easy access to medical journal articles and has extensive information about drugs. It has an illustrated medical encyclopedia, a medical dictionary and directories that help find doctors, dentists and hospitals.

PubMed Central is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the National Institutes of Health developed and managed by the National Library of Medicine. It is the database of choice for researchers and clinicians alike, to locate relevant articles, which in many cases, are linked directly to a publisher’s site for full-text information. PMC is a collection of peer-reviewed journal articles offering free access to its contents. PMC has material dating back to the mid-1800s or early 1900s for some journals. Currency varies by journal.

DailyMed. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the database contains high quality information about marketed drugs. The web site provides health information professionals and the public with standard, comprehensive and up-to-date resource on medications. It includes FDA approved labels used in drug package inserts.

Merck Manual Online. The database, provided for free by Merck & Co., Inc., is a combined and enhanced online version of The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, The Merck Manual of Geriatrics, The Merck Manual of Medical Information-Home Edition and The Merck Manual of Health & Aging. The Merck Manual Online is continuously updated with new information, and contains photographs, and audio and video material not present in the print version.

Biographies Plus Illustrated contains up-to-date, illustrated biographies of renowned people in different fields and full-text articles from other Wilson’s biographical publications such as Current Biography, the World Author Series, Nobel Prize Winners, World Artists, World Musicians, World Film Directors, and American Reformers.

Books in Print is an online database that provides publication information for more than 5 million titles (including e-books, audio books, and videos) already in print. It also provides full-text book reviews and synopses. Newly published and forthcoming titles are continuously added to this database. Books in Print Professional for faculty and staff.

Testing and Education Reference Center provides study guides and practice tests for numerous popular standardized tests, including the GED, TOEFL, N-CLEX, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, U.S. Citizenship Test, and civil service exams. It contains admissions and program information for two- and four-year colleges. Users can search for career, vocational, and distance learning programs by geographic location and specialty. There is also a large database of scholarship and grant information. (Note: The user must set up a user account, which is free of charge, in order to take the practice tests.)

Oxford English Dictionary Online contains the complete text of the twenty-volume printed OED (Second Edition) plus the three-volume Additions Series. The entry for each word includes its definition, pronunciation, and etymology as well as quotations showing its use throughout history.

Chronicle of Higher Education is the premier source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. The Chronicle is published every weekday and is the top destination for news, advice, and jobs for people in academe. The Chronicle's Web site features the complete contents of the latest issue; daily news and advice columns; thousands of current job listings; articles published since September 1989.

Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory and Practice provides the latest findings about student retention in higher education. Articles cover discussion and research in current retention theory and practice, attrition theory, future trends theory, enrollment management problems, programs and services to promote student goal completion, distance education, and the application of theory and practice to non-traditional students, as well as other topics.
