Types of Classes

English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides instruction for non-native speakers of English. ESL courses range from providing basic language and life skills for complete beginners to helping advanced students refine their English in preparation for higher education, vocational training, or a career. Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar are included at all levels of instruction. Supplemental ESL classes are available in areas such as conversation, writing, and career development.

GED, Adult Basic Education, Literacy

The General Educational Development (GED) Program offers preparation for the GED (high school equivalency) examination in English or Spanish. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program provides courses to adults who test below the GED level and need to improve basic reading and math skills before they qualify to move into the GED level. In addition, literacy classes are offered at Truman College for adults who need to learn to read and write.

The length of time necessary to prepare for the GED exam depends on a combination of factors including the student's initial reading and math scores, previous years of education, length of time out of school, level of motivation, and amount of time available for study and homework.

For more information about the GED, visit the Cook County GED Test Information website or the Official GED Testing Service Site. Students might also be interested in the Constitution Study Guide (pdf).

Online GED-i Program

Truman College also offers an online GED preparation program called GED-i. With GED-i you can study for the GED exam from home on your own time, and GED-i identifies the areas you need to work on, targeting instruction to your specific needs. To be eligible for the GED-i Program, students must:

  • pass a placement test (given at registration) in Reading and Math
  • have reliable and convenient access to a computer with high-speed internet access, preferably at home
  • have basic computer skills such as keyboarding, navigating the Internet and using email
  • be able to work independently and be willing to spend a minimum of 5-7 hours per week studying online

GED-I registration is year round and the placement test required to register is given in Room L912 every Monday at 2:00 pm and every Thursday at 9:00 am. (Please allow 3 and 1/2 hours to take the placement test and meet with a counselor to discuss registration.) For more information on the GED-i program call (773) 907-4350 or send email to jlandau@ccc.edu.

Citizenship

Citizenship classes are offered for adults who are preparing to take the US Citizenship and Immigration Services citizenship examination. The course addresses the content of the exam itself as well as the language skills necessary for the INS interview. Students also learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and how to access community services.

Supplemental

A limited number of supplemental classes are available in Basic Writing, Career Development, and Basic Math. These courses are held on Friday mornings, as well as other times in the morning, early afternoon, and evening. Students must be enrolled in a regular Adult Education class in order to qualify for supplemental classes. Teachers will provide students with more details including registration information.
