Adult Education > Adult Educator Qualifications

In the City Colleges of Chicago, the preferred qualification for hiring new Adult Educators is now a Masters Degree in a discipline appropriate to their instructional subject.

If candidates do not have the preferred degree, they must have a Bachelors degree in a related field such as linguistics, TESOL, English, or a foreign language (for ESL), or elementary or secondary education, reading, mathematics, etc. (for ABE/GED). This must be combined with at least one of the following:

• K-12 certification
• significant experience teaching adults or other discipline-related experience
• 15 graduate hours in the discipline they will be teaching
• current enrollment in a related Masters degree program
