The Harold Washington Scholarship can cover the cost of tuition
for an Associate's degree from Truman College for Adult Education
students who meet all the requirements and who do not qualify
for financial
aid.
There are two application deadlines per year: June 30 for the Fall
semester, and November 15 for the Spring semester. Interested students
should obtain a scholarship application from the Admissions
Office as early as possible and follow her instructions, returning
the application by the deadline even if some documentation is missing.
The requirements are slightly different for ESL students and GED
students who pass the exam in English. ESL students must do
the following:
- Turn in a letter of recommendation from their teacher with with
the scholarship application.
- Provide a certificate showing completion of the highest level
of ESL at Truman College or Lakeview Learning
Center.
- Show proof of passing the GED test with a qualifying score, or
show proof of high school graduation in their country with a B average
equivalent.
- Achieve sufficient scores on the college entrance exams to demonstrate
readiness for college-level work.
- Live in Chicago.
- While receiving the scholarship, be a full-time student (12 credit
hours or more each semester), and maintain a B average.
GED students who take the GED course in English and pass the
exam in English must do the following:
- Turn in a letter of recommendation from their teacher with the
scholarship application.
- Show proof of passing the GED test (English version) with a score
of 260 or higher.
- Achieve sufficient scores on the college entrance exams to demonstrate
readiness for college-level work.
- Live in Chicago.
- While receiving the scholarship, be a full-time student (12 credit
hours or more each semester), and maintain a B average.
